My research focuses on language production, especially on the process
from sound pattern retrieval to articulation. I have been pursuing
several general questions that arise from this focus: How do meaning and
mechanics interact in production? What aspects of production are driven
by phonology and what are driven by the exigencies of speech motor
control? How is the tension between linguistic and motoric demands
resolved during acquisition? For a number of years, my research strategy
for answering these questions has been to focus on speech and language
phenomena related to the syllable-a fundamental unit in theories of
language production and representation. My current work is aimed at
extending these inquiries to include larger prosodic domains. Overall,
my work contributes to our understanding of the representations used in
speech planning, how speech timing is achieved, and the phonetic bases
of speech segmentation.
