Language Teaching Specialization Course of Study

The Master of Arts (M.A.) program with a language teaching specialization requires a solid course background in basic linguistics along with courses specifically designed for second language teaching preparation.

 

Length of Program

Five consecutive quarter terms; beginning summer term, and continuing through the subsequent summer term (15 months). For exceptions see TOEFL admission requirements under Admission Reqirements. Students from universities sharing a joint program with UO begin fall term and continue through summer (12 months).

 

Course load:

12-13 credits per term.

*Students teaching a language other than English have the option of replacing these courses with comparable courses in their language of study.

Electives

Students working towards an M.A. degree must take an additional 6 credits of designated elective course work. Students who have already taken any of the required courses or their equivalents, should replace them with elective course work in consultation with their advisor.

Language Requirement

Students are required to have at least two years of one foreign language within the past seven years. At the M.A. level, any foreign language is acceptable, including English for an international student whose first language is not English.

Terminal Project

All students working towards an M.A. degree with the language teaching specialization must complete a terminal project over two consecutive terms. . Projects are individual. Weekly group sessions provide guidance. The project topic must be approved by the Terminal Project course instructor and the student's advisor and be presented in an LT 611 class session during the final term.

Course Descriptions, Linguistics and Language Teaching (LT)

428/528 Teaching Culture and Literature in EFL (4) 
Issues in teaching English as a global language. Interaction between language and culture. Application to teaching of literature. Teaching focus: British and North American literature.-

440/540 Linguistic Principles and Second Language Learning (4) 
Introduction to how language is learned in school contexts; underlying human language principles. Special attention to learning issues that classroom teachers need to address. Students cannot receive credit for both LING 440/540 and LING 444/544.

441/541 Teaching English Pronunciation (4) 
Introduction to English phonetics and phonology, methods for teaching pronunciation, lesson plan development and teaching.

445/545 Second Language Teaching (4) Approaches and principles in teaching second languages. Theoretical and pedagogical principles of language teaching, including focus on language skills. Prereq: LING 440/540 or LING 444/544 or instructor's consent.

446/546 Second Language Teaching Practice (4) 
Application of teaching principles and practice in teaching instruction and testing. Practical methods for developing learner skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and related skills. Prereq: LT 445/545

448/548 Curriculum and Materials Development (5)Introduction to the elements of curriculum design and related materials development. A systematic basis for development and implementation of language curriculum. Practical application. Prereq: LT 446/546

449/549 Testing and Assessment (5) 
Principles and types of language testing; focus on classroom testing. Test design and integration into curriculum. Test planning with consideration of classroom and situational variables. Prereq: LT 448/548.

605 Reading and Conference: [Topic] (1-9) 
Individual reading and bibliographic work supervised by a faculty member. Prereq: Instructor's consent.

608 Workshop: Computer Assisted Language Learning (1R)
A four-term course required to complete an MA in language teaching specialization (LTS). Weekly sessions provide technology support for required LTS courses. Prereq: Program majors. This course must be taken for 4 consecutive terms.

611 Terminal Project (1-4R) 
A two-term course required to complete an MA in the language teaching specialization. Projects are individual. Weekly group sessions provide guidance. Prereq: Program terminal project. This is a two-term course. It must be repeated once for a total of 7-8 credits. It may be repeated up to three additional terms with advisor approval. Prereq: Instructor's consent.
