Linguistics MA: Language Teaching Specialization (LTS)
Program Overview
The MA in Linguistics with a Language Teaching Specialization (LTS) is a 15 month (5 term) program designed
for the foreign language teacher, i.e. the teacher of EFL (English),
JFL (Japanese), CFL (Chinese), SFL (Spanish), etc. One of the primary
goals of the program is to prepare leaders in international education
and language teaching.
While covering principles and topics related to foreign language
teaching in general, this MA specialization focuses on the EFL classroom
and its needs, as opposed to the more frequent ESL/TESL focus. The
program is particularly sensitive to the changing needs of the EFL
learner in this era of globalization and internationalization of
the English language.
Towards this end, course work:
- integrates the use of modern technology to bring real language
into the EFL classroom, wherever it is located,
- views methodology based on principles and approaches that can
be applied to fit varying language learning situations,
- provides a background in testing to match the new international
need for proficiency-based tests,
- includes education courses to meet the needs of future leaders
in public school language teaching around the world,
- requires the application of information and principles studied
to a final applied project specific to "real" individual situations,
- ensures graduate level of English Language proficiency.
Financial Aid
Due to the short and intensive nature of the LTS program, the Department does not allocate GTF positions to this program. GTF positions are sometimes available in other departments. For example, native speakers of certain languages may find GTF appointments at the American English Institute, East Asian Languages and Literature, and The World Languages Academy. Check the Graduate School website for other financial aid opportunities. http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/?page=fundingResources
