Welcome to the
Department of Linguistics
Language Teaching Specialization (LTS) Masters program
for Fall 2011
This information should provide some answers to questions you may have before arriving at the UO. So let’s get started…...
International students are concerned about receiving the I-20 as quickly as possible. We understand the urgency but the department does not issue I-20’s. Here’s how the I-20 is issued at the UO. The department recommends to the Graduate School admittance to the program, then Graduate School reviews the documents for completeness and approves. The Admissions Office then reviews documents including degreed transcripts, financial statements, and I-20 application that the applicant sent directly to them. If all documents are in order, then an official acceptance letter is issued by the Admissions Office, including the I-20. This process can take 4-6 weeks. However, should a document be missing, this admission process can take additional weeks.
Where do I stay? Apartments, graduate dorms and houses are located near campus. Check the UO Housing website http://housing.uoregon.edu/ for information. Also Associated Students of University of Oregon (ASUO) rental office has housing listings website http://asuorental.uoregon.edu/index.php?cmd=tab&tab=rental. The local newspaper, Eugene Register-Guard has rental listings also http://www.registerguard.com/web/news/index.csp.
After you arrive on campus, now what? You need to check-in with Kathy Rasmussen, Graduate Coordinator. She will provide you with a Getting Started packet which will include How to Get a Student Photo ID card, department keys, copy code, mail boxes, etc. Kathy Rasmussen’s office is 233 Straub Hall, hours Monday through Friday 8:00-noon, 1:00-5:00.
After arriving, you should meet with your advisor, Dr. Keli Yerian. She will be available for appointments after September 13. Her email addrss is yerian@uoregon.edu and her phone number is 541-346-4302. Her office is located in 232 Straub Hall. While it is not necessary to meet with you advisor prior to registering for classes, it is recommended.
As a student of the UO you can get a UO email address for free. It is important to get the email address (and inform Kathy Rasmussen) as soon as possible. Please note that, the address can only be obtained after registering for classes. The reason it is important to have a UO email address instead of your own is only UO emails can access Blackboard. Faculty post lecture notes, class handouts, class syllabi, class assignments on Blackboard. Also the Linguistics Department maintains a Blackboard site which includes all LTS Terminal Projects, future class schedules, etc. Email address information can be obtained at the Information Services website http://cc.uoregon.edu/cnews/fall2005/use_acct.htm.
As stated above, you can register for classes at any time. In your admissions packet from the Admissions office you received a Personal Access Code (PAC). You will need this code to register. Go to DuckWeb enter your UO ID number (starts with 951) and password (located in your admission packet) and follow the screens. If you have problems registering come see Kathy Rasmussen for help. Problems come up from time to time and she can assist you solving the problem.
As an incoming student there are lots of orientation meetings to attend. The department website has a list of the meetings http://logos.uoregon.edu/programs/graduate/orientation.shtml. Check it out so you’ll know where you need to be and when.
With your student ID card you can ride the Lane Transit District (LTD) bus for free. Not only is it free but it drops you off right at the UO.
We hope you find this information helpful. If you have any questions between now and your arrival, please contact Kathy Rasmussen (kathyr@uoregon.edu).
